MIAMI - From the mannerisms to the gritty playing approach to what no longer adorns his body, Jamaal Magloire is about as old school as it gets on the Heat roster.

"He's 30 going on 40," teammate Udonis Haslem jokes. "His body is certainly 30 going on 40."

To a degree, the Canadian-born, Kentucky-schooled center stands as a throwback. In an age of flash and flamboyance, Magloire has gone austere.

As recently as last season, you just might have noticed the tattoo on his left bicep, the one that read, "Mister Magloire." Now, there barely is a shadow.

"I got my tattoo in high school, and I was in a different frame of mind," he says after another sweat-drenched workout. "I'm just getting older, a little more conservative. I have a son coming up and just want to lead by example."

The Miami HEAT announced today that they have signed free agent center Jamaal Magloire. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“We are very fortunate to be able to come to terms with Jamaal Magloire,” said HEAT President Pat Riley. “We feel that he will dramatically support our post position. He is an excellent rebounder with a big body. On the defensive end he will plug up the paint and the offensive end he can score. We feel that this is definitely the right place for him to re-energize his career.”

A former NBA All-Star (2004), Magloire has averaged 8.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, 1.03 blocks and 24.2 minutes during an eight-year NBA career which has included stints with the Hornets (Charlotte: 2000-02 and New Orleans: 2002-05), the Milwaukee Bucks (2005-06), the Portland Trail Blazers (2006-07), the New Jersey Nets (2007-08) and the Dallas Mavericks (2007-08). In his 537 NBA regular season games he has connected on 47.9 percent of his field goal attempts. Additionally, Magloire has appeared in 36 postseason contests and has averaged 9.1 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.11 blocks while hitting 47.7 percent of his field goal attempts.

Four times in his career the 6’11”, 265-pound center has appeared in all 82 games during a season and five times in the past seven seasons he has played at least 81 games. His best season occurred during the 2003-04 campaign with the New Orleans Hornets where he was selected as an Eastern Conference All-Star and averaged career highs in both points (13.6 ppg) and rebounds (10.3 rpg) and was one of just 11 players in the NBA that season to average a double-double. He topped the Eastern Conference in scoring in the 2004 NBA All-Star Game with 19 points. Magloire finished the 2003-04 season ranked among the NBA leaders in offensive rebounding (5th), overall rebounding (7th) and field goal percentage (tied for 27th).

Magloire split the 2007-08 season between the New Jersey Nets and the Dallas Mavericks. He saw action in 31 games (two starts) and averaged 1.8 points, 2.9 rebounds and 9.2 minutes.

The Mavericks filled a need for a true backup center Tuesday by signing free agent Jamaal Magloire, a former All-Star waived by New Jersey last week.

Magloire (6-11, 265) will practice Wednesday and be available for Thursday night’s visit to San Antonio. The 29-year-old helps fill the void left when Gana Diop was shipped to the Nets as part of the Jason Kidd trade.

We’re very fortunate to be able to acquire Jamaal Magloire, president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson said. We were concerned about our backup center spot after the trade and this will provide us some much needed depth.

Magloire has played sparingly this season his first in New Jersey but he’s been productive for most of his eight-year career. He averaged 9.2 points and 9.5 rebounds with Milwaukee in 2005-06, his last season as a full-time starter. Those numbers dipped to 6.5 points and 6.1 boards last season in Portland when he mostly came off the bench.

Magloire Waiting for Chance

NEW JERSEY - Jamaal Magloire dropped a black jump rope to the floor, picked up a ball from the rack, and looked across the court last night during warm-ups. And in that brief moment he probably thought about what might have been.

But it was only brief. If he had somehow still been a member of the Trail Blazers, who were at Izod Center last night, there was no guarantee his season would be very different. He averaged only 21 minutes per game last year, but that's 21 more than he's averaged with the Nets lately.
 
And the Blazers have as many young bigs taking up the court time as the Nets have, only they're even more talented.

So for Magloire, the issue is simple: The timing of his free-agent summer was fine, even if his departure from Portland coincided with the Blazers becoming the most interesting story in the NBA this season.

"I don't miss it much, just some of the guys, really," said the Nets' backup center, who got into only four of the last 12 games entering last night -- for a grand total of 19 minutes. "I'm happier here in New Jersey. It's an opportunity to be in the East, which is closer to home."

He paused. You could see there was a "but" coming.

"It definitely hasn't been what I expected," he said, "but I'll continue to be a good soldier and work hard. And when I get called on, I'll be ready."
