Jamaal Magloire Launches 2012 Toronto Caribbean Carnival Costumes
TORONTO, ONT. (May 2012) – On Saturday, May 12, 2012 at the Armenian Community Centre (45 Hallcrown Place), Toronto Raptors Captain and Toronto Revellers Band Leader Jamaal Magloire will launch his costume lineup for the 2012 Scotiabank Toronto Caribbean Carnival. This year, his band’s theme is “Bollywood: Lights, Camera, Action!” with fabrics and designs inspired by the Indian film industry. “We have a strong team this year, and I’m excited to reveal the costumes that our masqueraders will be wearing during the parade in August,” said Magloire. “We have assembled a group of great designers, creative minds, DJs, models, volunteers, and administrators to help us create the best costumes and the best carnival experience possible.” The Toronto Revellers is Magloire’s cultural non-profit organization that aims to contribute to the multicultural landscape of Canada by promoting, celebrating, and exploring the rich cultural diversities and traditions of the Caribbean. Since entering the Caribana competition in 2005, the Toronto Revellers have become a premier masquerader band in the Scotiabank Toronto Caribbean Carnival. In 2007 and 2008, they captured back-to-back “Band of the Year” titles, and band involvement has now grown to almost 2000 participants. “I love carnival. The sounds, the colours, the camaraderie, the festivities…it is a great way to celebrate my Caribbean heritage and a great way to include the younger generation—through through the junior carnival—so they don’t lose this important part of our legacy. Toronto’s carnival is a staple of the city, and I’m honoured to be able to play a role in its progress each year.” Known as “The People’s Band,” the Toronto Revellers are ready to capture their third Band of the Year title this year, and hope to encourage participation from Torontonians of all backgrounds. “With our Bollywood costumes, we are celebrating Indian culture fused with Caribbean culture. This is Toronto, a diverse city! We encourage everyone to get involved…and not just from the sidelines. This year I want to see people playing mas who have never even considered it before! I want to show Toronto that this Carnival and the surrounding events are about more than just music and dancing. It represents coming together, celebrating our city, enjoying one another, and continuing this strong tradition.” For more information about the Toronto Revellers band launch, costumes, and ongoing initiatives, please visit www.TorontoRevellers.com. |
