Big Cat's Corner | REMEMBERING FLEMINGDON PARK
Wednesday, 15 February 2012

Big Cat's Corner There were two neighbourhoods that raised me when I was growing up in Toronto. Havenbrook, and Flemingdon Park. Last week I reflected on my years in Havenbrook…this week, I’m looking back at Flemmo. I proudly rep both locations and their influence on my life.

The Flemingdon Park neighbourhood is located around Don Mills and Eglinton. While my family physically resided on Havenbrook Boulevard, north on Don Mills, I did spend a lot of my time in Flemmo. I attended kindergarten there, my dad would play soccer there every Sunday at the park, I had a brother and sister that lived there, and it naturally became my second home.

I learned about being militant from my experiences in Flemingdon Park. I learned about perseverance and how to be strong-willed and thick-skinned from a lot of good soldiers in this neighbourhood. Men that faced constant adversity, yet still walked with their chests high—these are the individuals that helped me to become the man that I am today.

Big Cat's Corner There were two neighbourhoods that raised me when I was growing up in Toronto. Havenbrook and Flemingdon Park. This week I’d like to reflect on my years in Havenbrook…next week, I’ll comment on Flemmo. I proudly rep both locations and their influence on my life.

Havenbrook Boulevard is located in North York…west of Don Mills and south of Sheppard, close to Fairview Mall; this is where my family lived for about 16 years, from when I was in grade one straight through high school and college. This was my home. In many ways, it will always be my home.

Big Cat's Corner I haven’t spent much time in Toronto lately because the Raptors have been on the road, but it hurts my heart to come back to the city and hear about the recent murders, shootings, and violence.

Even though I may not know all of the victims personally, I am still affected. A lot of people are affected. The community is hurting. We don’t want to see another year marked in gun violence…or any kind of violence. Going into February, Black History Month, and the month of love, it is painful to know that there is so much destruction, and so little value placed on life.

I know that violence happens in every community and to every race of people…but it is particularly difficult to deal with when it is your community, and your people.

Big Cat's Corner | Leaving a Legacy
Wednesday, 25 January 2012

Big Cat's CornerWhat will your legacy be when you’re finishing up forty years in the workforce, watching your grandchildren grow, or looking back at your years of hard work, limited sleep, and big dreams?

God has a vision for all of us, even though sometimes it’s difficult to see. There is a master plan for everyone, but sometimes other things get in the way, and people never have the chance to see that plan through to the end, or even get started on it.

Naturally, every now and then I look at my career and I hope I have done my best to take advantage of the opportunities I have been given, and that I have the inspiration to move forward with my purpose. As much as I love the game of basketball, I don’t necessary think that it is the beginning and the end of what my legacy is supposed to be.
